Opera North is England’s national opera company in the North. Founded as English National Opera North in 1978, the Company has maintained a commitment to producing work of the highest quality that excites, challenges and entertains for four decades. Recent successes include the innovative concert staging of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen, led by outgoing Music Director Richard Farnes, which was rewarded with two RPS Music Awards and a South Bank Sky Arts Award.

The Orchestra of Opera North holds a unique place amongst British orchestras as the only ensemble with a year-round dual role in the opera house and concert hall, and the versatile Chorus also performs independently, constantly revitalising their approaches to music-making. Opera North is proud of its northern roots and provides a valuable resource for the cultural life of the region and for the development of young talent. Opera North Education is one of the leading arts education departments in the country, delivering a range of workshops and creative projects, encouraging young people and communities to explore the art form of opera.

Opera North regularly collaborates with artists and companies working in a variety of media, including film and visual art. The work of Opera North Projects crosses conventional boundaries, bringing classical and contemporary arts together in an eclectic programme of performance, visual arts commissions, literary events and artistic development, including year-round events at the Howard Assembly Room, Leeds. Recent commissions include The Height of the Reeds, a sound walk for the Humber Bridge as part of Hull City of Culture 2017.
