Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk – ‘All you men are the same’

Extracts | Shostakovich

Katerina, the Wife (Chrystal E Williams), comes to the rescue of the Maid who is sexually harassed by the men. By standing up against Sergueï, the Lover (Brenden Gunnell), she asserts that women are as strong and brave as men.

Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk was directed by Graham Vick, who created Birmingham Opera Company in 2000 in order to share the transformative power of top-quality opera with the many and not the few. Many people owe him their careers, others their wellbeing. OperaVision, as the wider operatic world, will miss him deeply.

The full performance is no longer available but other material about the production can be found here.
