The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet is the country’s largest institution for music and the dramatic arts, and presents operas, ballets and concerts of the highest artistic quality. The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet consists of the companies the Norwegian National Ballet and the Norwegian National Opera, in addition to the Norwegian National Opera Orchestra, the Norwegian National Opera Chorus, the Norwegian National Opera Children’s Chorus and the Norwegian National Ballet School.  As the only national institution within its art forms, The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet also contributes to the further development of creative and producing opera and ballet activities across the country. The institution is organised as a limited company and is wholly-owned by the Norwegian state.

The Norwegian National Opera is Norway's only professional opera ensemble and was founded in 1959 with Kirsten Flagstad as its first Director. In 2008 it moved into the new Opera House, consisting of three stages, advanced stage machinery and excellent acoustics. The company currently comprises 9 soloists, 4 apprentice places, the Norwegian National Opera Chorus and the Norwegian National Opera Children's Chorus, which have 53 and 70 members respectively. Each season, the Norwegian National Opera also engages a variety of national and international guest soloists. Annilese Miskimmon took over as Opera Director August 2017.

The Norwegian National Ballet is the only classical ballet company in Norway. Besides classics like Swan Lake and The Nutcracker the company's repertoire covers works by the internationals masters like Jiří Kylian, Nacho Duato and Sol León and Paul Lightfoot. The Ballet Director is Ingrid Lorentzen.
