OPERA America

Lawrence Brownlee

Conversations

Lawrence Brownlee grew up in Ohio, with a musical childhood, playing trumpet, guitar and drums, and singing Gospel music in church, forced by his father, the choir master. He eventually joined the Young Artist programmes at Seattle Opera and the Wolf Trap Opera Company, and has become an operatic tenor particularly associated with the bel canto repertoire. He was named ‘Male Singer of the Year’ by the International Opera Awards.

He shares his experiences with Marc Scorca, President of Opera America: from discovering his voice to how he prepares for each role.
