World Opera Day is 25 October

A global initiative to raise awareness of the positive impact and value of opera for society.

25 October 2019 will be the first World Opera Day, an initiative led by three professional opera organisations: Opera America, Opera Latinoamérica and Opera Europa. World Opera Day is an awareness campaign about the positive impact and value of opera for society. Opera, like other arts, contributes to developing tolerance and understanding, opening minds and connecting people with strong, universal emotions. Just as sport shapes a healthy body, the arts shape a healthy mind.

— A concerted effort to preserve our heritage is a vital link to our cultural, educational, aesthetic, inspirational and economic legacies – all of the things that quite literally make us who we are. UNESCO

The choice of 25 October is no accident. The date falls on the birthdays of Georges Bizet and Johann Strauss, composers of possibly the world’s most famous opera and operetta. OperaVision will toast the occastion by streaming Bizet’s Carmen from the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing and Strauss’ Die Fledermaus from the Wiener Staatsoper.

In the spirit of World Opera Day's global reach, OperaVision also streamed a production of La bohème from the National Center for the Performing Arts in Mumbai in early September, and will stream Don Giovanni from the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma on 26 October and The Barber of Seville from the Teatro Municipal de Santiago on 27 October.

Opera America, Opera Latinoamérica and Opera Europa enlisted the support of numerous partners to mark World Opera Day, including national opera organisations, such as (Canada), Réunion des Opéras de France (France), Deutscher Bühnenverein (Germany), Opera XXI (Spain) and Opera & Music Theatre Forum (UK). The National Centres for the Performing Arts in Beijing and Mumbai have also committed to be part of this campaign.

World Opera Day is a day when opera companies, along with opera professionals and opera lovers, celebrate the value of the art form. The initiatives they plan will aim to respond to local needs to show that opera is a force for good in local communities.
