Kolobov Novaya Opera Theatre Moscow
The Kolobov Novaya Opera Theatre of Moscow was founded in 1991 on the initiative of prominent Russian conductor Evgeny Kolobov (1946–2003) and the Moscow city administration. The theatre is located in the city’s historical centre, the Hermitage Garden.
Evgeny Kolobov’s artistic principles, his uncompromising stand in art and his team of like-minded colleagues made the theatre very popular with the public. The two most important and often converging directions in the repertoire were, on the one hand, the opening of the classical legacy’s unknown pages (the Novaya Opera staged the first Russian productions of Donizetti's Maria Stuarda, Catalani’s La Wally, Verdi’s I due Foscari, Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov in the composer’s original version, and Thomas’ Hamlet) and, on the other hand, Evgeny Kolobov’s original versions of popular operatic masterpieces (Verdi’s La traviata and Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin).
Modern Novaya Opera is a prominent theatre whose repertoire includes the outstanding Russian and international operas, staged by famous opera directors, musical performances for the young audience and unique concert programs. Orchestra, choir and the conductors of the Novaya Opera are high-class professionals. Soloists of the Novaya Opera are highly acclaimed in many opera theatres all around the world. Anton Getman is the director of the Novaya Opera.
Valentin Uryupin, music director and principal conductor of the Novaya Opera, is one of the most prominent young Russian artists. There were two Russian premieres under his baton in the Novaya Opera: full version of a song-cycle Correspondances for soprano and orchestra by Henri Dutilleux and an oratorio La Passion de Simone by Kaija Saariaho. Valentin Uryupin is an author of a cycle of symphonic programs in the 2021/2022 season. They are dedicated to the 130th anniversary of the birth of Sergei Prokofiev.
Valentin Uryupin had already conducted Symphonies №4 and №6, suite from the ballet Le pas d'acier, Piano concerto №4 (soloist – Yeol Eum Son), cantata Alexander Nevsky by Sergei Prokofiev. By the end of 2022 all Prokofiev’s symphonies will be performed.
In 2021, the theatre launched annual Dance residencies. Aim of the project is to represent at the Novaya Opera the performances of Russian and international modern dance theatre companies. The first Dance residence was opened by Ekaterinburg modern choreography theater Provincial dances theater led by Tatiana Baganova. It is one of the first modern dance companies in Post-Soviet Russia, most reputable and significant.
In 2021/2022 season two Russian premieres are planned: Die tote Stadt by Erich Wolfgang Korngold (conductor – Valentin Uryupin, production – Vasily Barkhatov) and Stiffelio by Giuseppe Verdi (conductor – Alexandru Samoilă, production – Ekaterina Odegova).
