Slovak National Theatre Opera was founded in 1920 as part of the Slovak National Theatre. Many important artistic personalities of music history, such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni, have been guests of the opera house, conducting their works here, along with singers Fyodor Chaliapin, Richard Tauber and Emma Destinn. After World War II, the theatre received its first great national work, the musical drama Krútňava by Eugen Suchoň. Slovak National Theatre Opera stage also hosted the premières of great works by leading European opera composers, Slovak composers Eugen Suchoň and Ján Cikker.

The Opera of the Slovak National Theatre is currently a noteworthy Central European stage. It cooperates with top conductors (Juraj Valčuha, Václav Luks, Tomáš Netopil, Robert Jindra, Enrico Dovico, Marco Guidarini, Pietro Rizzo) and directors (Peter Konwitschny, David Radok, Roman Polák, Gilbert Blin, Roberto Catalano, Sláva Daubnerová). The theatre's repertoire consists mainly of 18th to 20th century opera (Don Giovanni, Maria Stuarda, Carmen, Nabucco, La traviata, Aida, The Bartered Bride, Rusalka, Tosca, The Cunning Little Vixen) but it also pays attention to contemporary opera (Impresario Dotcom).

The partners of several SND Opera projects have been major European theatres and festivals such as Opera Ballet Vlaanderen in Antwerp and Ghent, Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg, Opéra Royal de Versailles, National Theatre Prague and Bregenzer Festspiele.
