Il trionfo dell'onore
The charming but unscrupulous Riccardo pursues women while avoiding the consequences of his libertine lifestyle. His latest target is Leonora, whose love becomes entangled with the schemes of her brother Ercole and the virtuous protagonist Rosina. As Riccardo’s deceptions unravel, he is forced to face the consequences. But can the notorious libertine truly reform and find redemption?
Premiered on 26 November 1718 in Naples at the Teatro dei Fiorentini, Il trionfo dell'onore is Alessandro Scarlatti’s only known comedy. Considered an early model of opera buffa, it has a coherent dramaturgical-musical structure with its interplay of no less than four couples. Scarlatti juggles a series of ensemble pieces, culminating in the superb concertato at the close of the second act. Stefano Vizioli’s production from La Fenice in Venice created with pop artist Ugo Nespolo, is a riot of colourful shapes and comic-book imagery, a convincing blend of commedia dell’arte and slapstick. The excellent cast tackles a rich variety of arias, duets and quartets conveying the work’s pathos as well as its sassy humour.

SYNOPSIS
Act I
Pisa and its surroundings, seventeenth century. Riccardo, a dissolute young man, has fled Lucca with his inseparable friend Rodimarte Bombarda. Together they stop to visit Flaminio, Riccardo’s uncle, because they want to ask him for money for their wanderings. Leonora, who has been seduced and abandoned by Riccardo, goes to Pisa to look for him. Once she arrives, she faints in front of the house of Flaminio’s betrothed, Cornelia, who rescues her and takes her in. Doralice, Cornelia’s niece, then also arrives at her aunt’s house in search of Riccardo, since he has promised to marry her. The group is completed by Erminio, Leonora’s brother who is in love with Doralice. Leonora and Doralice soon realise that they are in love with the same man. For Riccardo Leonora is water under the bridge, and now he wants to have fun with Doralice. Meanwhile, Rodimarte takes an interest in the maid Rosina.
Act II
Erminio discovers that in addition to having dishonored his sister, Riccardo has also stolen his beloved Doralice. Flaminio and Cornelia are perplexed by the growing tension among the young people. Cornelia is curious to understand more, while Flaminio only wants to woo Rosina in peace, and is furious when he finds her with Rodimarte. At the same time,Cornelia discovers Flaminio and Rosina. Leonora tries to convince her beloved to return with her, but Riccardo refuses to listen and asks Doralice to flee with him and Rodimarte. Erminio also tries to win back Doralice, but without success.
Act III
Now out of his mind, Erminio is determined to take revenge on Riccardo, who is instead preparing to leave with Doralice and Rodimarte. The latter wants Rosina to join them, but once again he is surprised by Flaminio; Cornelia also joins the fight. From inside the house the sound of swords can be heard, and Riccardo comes out wounded. Doralice and Leonora try to stop Erminio, but everyone calms down when Riccardo repents and asks Leonora for forgiveness, promising to marry her. As honour triumphs, Doralice also repents and returns to Erminio, Flaminio and Cornelia make peace and Rodimarte and Rosina declare their reciprocal love.
