Lviv National Opera
Lviv National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after Solomiya Krushelnytska is one of the most beautiful opera houses in Europe. The building is one of the most recognisable cultural and architectural landmarks in Ukraine, distinguished by its unique exterior and interior decorations, which combine various neoclassical styles. The main theme of the theatre's decor, paintings and sculptures is the triumph of art, life and love. The grand opening of the theatre on 4 October 1900, attracted guests from all over Europe, and in its very first season, the world-renowned stars performed on its stage.
In 2000, on the occasion of its centennial anniversary, Lviv National Opera was named after the legendary Ukrainian soprano Solomiya Krushelnytska. In 2008, it became the first Ukrainian institution to join Opera Europa and has since been a regular participant in its annual conferences and major events. The theatre frequently welcomes distinguished guests, including presidents, government leaders, diplomatic delegations and renowned musicians from around the world.
Innovation and progress have been integral to the theatre’s development since its foundation, laid by architect Zygmunt Gorgolewski, and these values remain a priority today - in management, technical modernization, and, most importantly, on artistic and creative levels.
For 125 years, Lviv National Opera has been an inseparable part of not only cultural life of the city but also the national cultural landscape of Ukraine. It has witnessed epochal changes, served as a source of inspiration for artists and audiences and stood as a symbol of the resilience of Ukrainian culture in the face of historical challenges. The theatre’s building has become a place that unites generations and cultures, preserving the memory of the past, shaping the present, and confidently heading into the future.
