Teatro Regio Torino
Dating back to 1740, Teatro Regio is one of the world’s oldest opera houses still in operation. Originally designed by Benedetto Alfieri as a grand venue for the Savoy Court, it quickly became a cultural landmark and a key destination for 18th-century grand tours. Tragically, that ancient theatre was destroyed in a fire in 1936. Teatro Regio continued its productions in other venues until 1973, when a new and visionary building, designed by Carlo Mollino, was inaugurated with Verdi’s I Vespri Siciliani, the only opera directed by Maria Callas. Since the opening of its new house, the Teatro Regio offers an extensive and continuous artistic programme, with a rich calendar of opera and ballet alongside symphonic concerts featuring its acclaimed Orchestra and Chorus, as well as educational projects and cultural initiatives.
Currently headed by Superintendent Mathieu Jouvin and Artistic Director Cristiano Sandri, the Regio is one of the most interesting centres of opera production globally, with one of today’s greatest conductors, Riccardo Muti, a constant presence since 2022. Andrea Battistoni was appointed its new Music Director in 2025.
