Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre is one of the most important centres of the performing arts in Lithuania and the largest theatre of the country, consisting of permanent opera and ballet companies, a chorus and an orchestra as well as workshops for sets and costumes. Although opera and ballet as performing art forms appeared in Lithuania in the 17th century, the first professional state theatre was founded in 1920 and opened its first season with Verdi’s La Traviata. The professional ballet company started its activity five years later with Léo Delibes’ Coppélia.

In the last three decades, LNOBT has seen a significant increase in activity and a fresh approach to its repertoire. Today, LNOBT is a modern and innovative institution dedicated to offering its audiences the finest performances in both opera and ballet. The season usually starts in September and ends in June. On a repertoire basis, LNOBT showcases over 30 different opera and ballet productions during the season, as well as an average of 4 to 5 new productions each season. The theatre’s repertoire features a blend of classical and contemporary works, produced by some of the most talented directors and choreographers in the field. LNOBT also collaborates with renowned theatres around the world, including La Monnaie, Opera di Roma, San Francisco Opera, Israeli Opera, Teatro Real in Madrid, Canadian Opera Company, Opéra national de Paris, Houston Grand Opera, Metropolitan Opera in New York, English National Opera, Bayerisches Staatsballett and other outstanding institutions.
