A group of young artists in Paris. Their friendships and dreams are shaped by love, poverty, and the hardship of everyday existence. The romance between the poet Rodolfo and Mimì unfolds alongside the lively relationships of a close-knit circle of friends. As their lives become increasingly complicated, will their love and friendship stand firm?
From its first performance in Turin in 1896, Puccini’s La bohème has conquered the operatic world. Its power lies in the combination of conversational conciseness of the exchanges between the friends, rhythmical brilliance such as in the scene of the Christmas Eve hubbub and the lyricism of the lovers in their famous arias. Opening the 2026 Riga Opera Festival, Latvian National Opera’s lavish new production combines extrovert vibrancy with touching intimacy. Latvian director LAURA has gathered around her a creative team including set, lighting and video designer Fabien Lédé, costume designer Fyodor Podgorny (one half of the fashion brand Fyodor Golan) and choreographer Elza Leimane. A 21st century take on Puccini’s chef-d'œuvre.

STORY
Act I
The poet Rodolfo and the artist Marcello are trying to work creatively, but without success. Thankfully, even though their room is cold and cheerless, they have not lost their sense of humour. The philosopher Colline and the musician Schaunard arrive and succeed in lifting their friends’ spirits. Together they play a trick on the landlord, who unsuccessfully attempts to collect the rent. To celebrate, the friends go out in search of entertainment. Only Rodolfo remains in the apartment, as he has work to do. Unexpectedly, a young neighbour, named Mimì, appears and asks for his help. The two begin to talk and tell each other about their lives. Rodolfo is so deeply moved by her story that he immediately confesses his love for her. Mimì, too, is drawn to him. The friends’ voices are calling Rodolfo to join them at a party on the rooftop. He gladly accepts and invites Mimì to come along.
Act II
The city’s most vibrant bohemians have gathered at the party, along with those who wish to imitate them. Rodolfo, Mimì, Marcello, Schaunard and Colline are enjoying the evening. Musetta arrives with the wealthy Alcindoro; she has recently parted from Marcello, unable to accept the artist’s jealousy. Marcello tries to ignore his former lover. In order to win back his attention, Musetta stages a dazzling performance. She does everything she can to send Alcindoro away, so that he will not prevent her from making the most of the evening. When Alcindoro returns, Musetta, Marcello and his friends are gone. Who is to pay for it all?
Act III
A chilly, damp morning. Mimì arrives to ask Marcello for advice. Her progressing illness makes her feel physically unwell, as do Rodolfo’s frequent fits of jealousy. She hides when she learns that Rodolfo is approaching. In conversation with Marcello, Rodolfo initially complains about Mimì’s unwillingness to commit to a lasting relationship, though it soon transpires that the real problem is his beloved’s serious illness. Mimì overhears everything. Rodolfo tries to comfort her. Although they both know they must part, they postpone the decision for a moment. After a brief spell of happiness, Marcello and Musetta have a bitter quarrel and they too decide to separate.
Act IV
Marcello and Rodolfo try to work, but they are longing for their sweethearts. Schaunard and Colline arrive, in an attempt to distract both their friends and themselves. Musetta appears unexpectedly with Mimì, whose condition is now critical. It is clear that she needs serious medical help and financial support. The friends resolve to provide everything that is needed. Rodolfo and Mimì are happy to be together again. Soon the friends return with the help they have arranged. Mimì falls asleep. Everyone, except Rodolfo, realises that she has died.
