OPER! AWARDS 2023
For the first time outside Berlin and for the first time on OperaVision, we bring you Germany’s Opera Oscars live from Oper Dortmund.
Germany is the country with the highest number of opera houses in the world; nowhere else are more operas and operettas performed every year. The OPER! AWARDS are Germany’s only international opera prize, presented annually during a gala to the best creatives of the international opera scene, working on or behind the stage. As detailed below, the awards are presented across 20 categories by a jury of music journalists.

Winners on OperaVision
Elektra
The House of Atreus is caught in cycle of murder and revenge. For Ulrich Rasche’s production in Geneva, this tragedy takes the form of an imposing metal cylinder - in perpetual rotation and utterly inescapable. Richard Strauss' exhilarating score is performed by the Orchester de la Suisse Romande under the baton of Jonathan Nott.

It’s 1941 and not a good time for a German soldier and a French-Czech pianist to fall in love in Paris. Theater Bonn revive a forgotten jewel by Rolf Liebermann from 1952 anchored in the 12-tone technique but with lyrical nods and semiseria winks to the music of earlier times.
