The Princess (Maïlys de Villoutreys), who stayed in the royal palace after being caught in a storm, complains that she didn't sleep a wink because of something underneath her twenty matrasses. The Queen (Camille Merckx) reveals the pea that she placed at the bottom of the bed. The princess has passed the test - she truly is a real princess. She agrees to marry the Prince (Enguerrand de Hysand) and the King (Marc Mauillon) promises to place the pea in a museum.

‘Who can hope to escape’ the Enchanted Palace? At the end of the first act, the sorcerer Atlante has trapped all the characters inside. Singers, dancers and musicians wander through the labyrinth whose doors open and close to the rhythm of Luigi Rossi's baroque music.

Il Palazzo incantato has not been performed since its premiere in 1642. Music director Leonardo García Alarcón and stage director Fabrice Murgia breathe new life into this neglected masterpiece at the Dijon Opera.

A Governess (Laura Zecchini) has been appointed to take care of Miles and Flora. On the train journey to take up her new post, she is plagued by doubts and wonders what to expect.
 

The lyrics of Miles' (Tim Gasiorek) trance-like aria ‘Malo’ are a mnemonic for beginner Latin students, playing on the different meanings of the Latin root: ‘Malo: I would rather be | Malo: in an apple-tree | Malo: than a naughty boy | Malo: In adversity’. This portrays Miles as helpless in the face of the apparitions.

Act I. Ino understands the love that unites Jupiter and Semele (Nicole Chevalier). Cadmus announced the Semele's abduction by an eagle. Everyone mourns her disappearance. Semele appears from heaven, sighing with love for Jupiter. Conducted by Konrad Junghänel and directed by Barrie Kosky.
