The opera Tiger Hunters by Beskorovainyi, Humaniuk, and Reshitilov concludes with Hryhorii (Oleksii Kyryllov) and Natalka (Kateryna Yasenchuk) fleeing toward freedom. As the couple leaves everything behind to escape the NKVD, their family’s voices rise alongside theirs in a stirring wave of solidarity. Despite the perilous journey ahead, this finale stands as a powerful testament that hope and love can ultimately triumph over fear.

Despite the NKVD’s repression, a prisoner (Anna Kirsch) intones a Christmas prayer to support her fellow captives. Her voice rises and eventually rallies Natalka (Kateryna Yasenchuk), Mariika (Viktoriia Busel), Hryhorii (Oleksii Kyryllov), and the rest of the prisoners. This simple prayer then transforms into a powerful anthem of liberty and collective resistance, defying their tormentors.

This scene is sung by the three Wood Nymphs (Doubravka Novotná, Jarmila Vantuchová, Monika Jägerová) at the beginning of Rusalka, as they dance and play by a moonlit lake. Laughing and teasing, they describe the moon reflected in the water and mock the Water sprite as he awakens.

Growing up with opera

Montpellier's new production of Cavalleria Rusticana / Pagliacci is an opportunity to discover the very young artists of Opéra Junior. Affiliated with the Opéra Orchestre, Opéra Junior introduces and trains 200 young people aged 4 to 29 each season in the performing arts. In 2025, they won the Liliane Bettencourt Prize for Choral Singing, which, since 1989, has been celebrating the work of choirs and music schools that have made special contributions to French choral singing.
