The Year of Czech Music
Czech music is enjoyed on many opera stages. Thanks to collaborations with National Theatres in Brno and Prague, OperaVision has been extending the reach of both well- and little-known Czech music abroad. Discover through our selection below how Smetana’s operas, built on national history and rich in folkloric melodies, found continuity in Dvořák’s romantic style and Janáček’s modernism.
1824 was the year of birth of Bedřich Smetana, one of the greatest Czech composers. A hundred years later, in 1924, the Year of Czech Music was celebrated for the first time. In 2024, we celebrate Czech music once again with a selection of songs and arias by Smetana, Dvořák, Janáček, and the contemporary composer Ivan Acher.

The Kiss
A twist of fate offers the young widower Lukáš and his former lover Vendulka a second chance at the happiness once denied them. However, their short tempers, stubborn natures and lack of mutual understanding leave the lovers vulnerable to a serious quarrel all on account of a mere kiss.
The Two Widows
The calm and peaceful lives of two young widows - cousins Karolina and Anežka, who live together on a countryside estate - is suddenly stirred up by an unexpected visitor. It becomes obvious that the mysterious poacher, who suddenly appears in the estate’s forest, is not out hunting for a doe but rather pining for one of them.
